Chilli dog is a dish made out of hotdogs in buns topped with chilli con carne and cheese, a very popular fast food in areas of America where there is a large Mexican-American population like California, Texas and Arizona. The Chilli dog have several popular variations such as Coney dog, Michigan dog or Texas hotdog, they might not be 100% exactly the same but it shares the common concept of topping up hotdogs with chilli con carne. Those names does not also suggest where they came from as Coney dog originated in Michigan and Texas dog originated in Pennsylvania.
For the history, Sausages might had originated from Germany but the idea of placing it in a bun started during the 1870′s where a German immigrant by the name of Charles Feltman began selling sausages in rolls in Coney Island. The term “dog” was used since 1884 due to the accusations that sausage makers used dog meat. The word “hot” was added during the 1900 when the newspaper cartoonist Thomas Aloysius drew a cartoon coining “hot dogs” as a term for a recording breaking sale of these sausages in buns during a New York Giants baseball game at the Polo Grounds.

Very interesting history of hot dogs! Every now and again I crave one and since chilli is one of my favourite things in the world, I’m sure I could kill 2 birds with 1 stone with these.
Definitely my form of end of pub therapy! Luckily there’s a place in Sydney that’s open for 24hrs/7 days a week
I love German sausages but don’t eat many others but I could certainly make it with a Bratwurst
Yeah howdy! You’ve out done yourself! I want one.
Fantastic photo! Really, well done.
I love chili dogs! Delicious!
I could always eat about 10 chili dogs
Mmmm, chili dogs! Such great, junky food! It’s almost a requirement that the chili be as greasy as possible. Really good photo – it makes me want one right now! Actually it makes me want 2 or 3 – who can eat just one?
Thanks for this.
I had no idea where the term “hot dog” came from. How funny! I have to admit that I can eat a chilli dog only if it’s made with sausage. I’ve never been a fan of the traditional hot dog or wiener, even when I was a kid. On hot dog night, mom would make me a hamburger. However, in college I did eat a few chilli dogs mainly for the chilli and the price.
A friend of mine owned a chilli dog chop and she made a dynamite chili con carne, kind of like yours but without the beans. I haven’t thought about that for a long time! Thanks for bringing back a classic!
I always like hotdog sandwich! ^_^
It’s probably just me but I’ve never had Chili dogs even though I’m in California.
I am totally sending my son to your house. This seals the deal.
